Room to Grow. Space to Belong.

Affordable homes that keep families rooted in opportunity.

Hope Family Housing

Overview:

Hope Family Housing is an affordable housing initiative of Hotel Hope, designed to support families transitioning out of homelessness and foster connection across generations.

Building on Hotel Hope’s mission to support families experiencing homelessness, Hope Family Housing creates safe, stable rental housing for single parents and their children – paired intentionally with community elders – so that housing is not just shelter, but a foundation for connectedness and long-term wellbeing.

Why Hope Family Housing?

Families leaving homelessness often face an impossible gap: they are ready to reclaim their independence, but the housing market is not ready for them. Rising rents, limited availability, geographic isolation from economic opportunity, and a lack of supportive community have long been barriers preventing families from thriving.

Hope Family Housing exists to bridge that gap.

Our model provides:
• Permanent, affordable housing for families with children
• Built-in community support that reduces isolation
• Stability and dignity for elders seeking meaningful connection
• A pathway forward, not a temporary stop

Our Vision for Impact Over time

Our Intergenerational Housing Model

Hope Family Housing uses a duplex-based model intentionally designed to support two households, and three generations, at once.
Each duplex includes:

  • One unit for a single parent and her children
  • One unit for a community elder or retiree

In exchange for significantly reduced rent, the elder provides light, informal support such as after-school presence, mentoring, childcare assistance, or simply being a trusted adult nearby. Families, in turn, offer companionship, connection, and community.
This is not co-living. It is neighboring with purpose.

What Makes This Model Different

  • Mutual benefit, not charity — Every resident contributes and receives value.
  • Trauma-informed by design — Families maintain privacy, autonomy, and control over their lives.
  • Community-rooted — Homes are integrated into existing neighborhoods, not isolated developments.
Scalable and sustainable — Duplexes allow for thoughtful growth without large-scale displacement.

Our Development Partner & the “Double Stack” Model

Hope Family Housing is being developed in partnership with People’s Housing+, a local nonprofit developer known for innovative, neighborhood-scaled affordable housing solutions.

Together, we are using a “double stack” duplex model that allows us to thoughtfully increase housing capacity while preserving the character and rhythm of residential neighborhoods.

What Is the Double Stack Model?

On residential lots that meet certain minimum dimension requirements, the double stack approach allows for:

  • Two duplexes on a single lot
  • Four total housing units, arranged in a way that feels consistent with surrounding homes
  • A scale and footprint that aligns with existing neighborhood patterns

From the street, these homes still read as residential, not institutional or oversized, helping them blend naturally into the fabric of the block.

Why This Approach Matters

This model allows Hope Family Housing to:

  • Achieve meaningful density without disruption
We can house more families and elders without altering the complexion or feel of a neighborhood.
  • Revitalize disinvested areas
By activating vacant or underutilized lots, we contribute to neighborhood renewal in places where investment has historically been absent.
  • Create intentional community through proximity
The added density supports stronger relationships between families, elders, and neighbors without sacrificing privacy or autonomy.
  • Use land responsibly and efficiently
Especially in cities where land is limited and housing need is great, this approach maximizes impact per lot.

Built for Community, Not Just Capacity

The double stack model is not about building more for the sake of more. It is about building smarter by aligning housing design with community values, neighborhood context, and long-term sustainability.

By combining People’s Housing+’s development expertise with Hotel Hope’s deep experience supporting families exiting homelessness, Hope Family Housing is demonstrating how small-scale design choices can lead to outsized social impact.

From Shelter to Home

Hope Family Housing is a natural extension of Hotel Hope’s continuum of care:

  1. Emergency shelter at Hotel Hope
  2. Stabilization and goal-setting through Hope Horizon, Hotel Hope’s aftercare program
  3. Long-term housing stability through Hope Family Housing

This model helps families move from crisis, to stability, to a lasting home.
